Clay is known for deep cleansing skin, a natural, green and minimal way to decongest it, whilst not being too harsh for sensitive skins. Buying a clay mask in powdered form just means you know exactly what is going on your skin (yes, I know it is dirt but hey it’s better than lots of preservatives being used to keep a wet mask stable for storage in your bathroom cabinet!).

Maple Holistics got in touch with me to offer me this mask to try out. It’s taken me a few months to get to it, but I am glad I have. I have been a fan of clay masks from when I was a teenager. I quite enjoyed the ritual of adding water to the clay, mixing and watching it dry on my face, knowing that the dirt from pores had been drawn out. Similarly now, the clay not only feeds skin and deep cleanses pores but it hydrates too.

I enjoyed using their Ancient Clay facial mask. I’ve used it twice – the first time was a bit of a disaster and I didn’t add enough water and it ended up being a thick goop that sat like a layer of cottage cheese on my face; the second time was definitely a success. I actually followed their instructions (go figure)…1 scoop of clay to 2 scoops of water…and this time I blended it in a bowl and not my hand, so made a lot less mess. I created a much smoother paste that was much easier to apply to my face.

The mask contains 3 types of clay – French green clay (detoxes skin, stimulates cell renewal, draws out impurities), bentonite clay (exfoliates), and Multani Mitti (commonly known as Fuller’s Earth, reduces scars, blemishes and blackheads, hydrates skin). I love this last one, because it originated in a region of the Punjab where my family now live. Of course, the decomposed volcanic ash can be found elsewhere now.

My skin felt smoother afterwards, not too dried out as one would expect, and brighter the next day. I think I will be using this quite regularly. The only downside is that it isn’t as convenient as squeezing a mask out of a tube. Not for the lazy among us 🙂

I haven’t found a stockist for it here, but notice you can buy it on Amazon for 3 times the price that it is sold in the US. Shame about the distribution.
